Here's an excerpt of today's article, all about some ne'er do well musician in LIC!
(promoting my Monday night show at LIC bar)
The first time Lee Ann Westover rode on the 7 train, she was in “total ecstasy.” Not over the quicker journey into Manhattan but because of those ethnically diverse passengers cramming themselves into the car. She was reminded of Houston, the multicultural city where she grew up.
A
more thrilling subway experience inaugurated the singer’s love affair
with Long Island City where she moved from the East Village for
“kick-ass Italian food and to feel the breeze.” Westover’s
lived in Long Island City for 12 years now, and although the new, slick
condo-lined landscape is vastly different from the quirky vibe she
first remembers, she still loves it here. She buys her
wine at Vine, stretches out at The Yoga Room when she can and, of
course, savors Italian food at restaurants like Manducatis Rustica. An
affinity for Long Island City also encourages Westover to embrace the
local music scene by performing at venues such as the beloved LIC Bar –
known for its never-want-to-leave outdoor patio - where she’s got a gig next Monday evening.
Westover,
who currently enjoys rocking out to the likes of the talented Feist and
Santigold, is perhaps best known as the lead singer in The Lascivious
Biddies, a charming trio of harmonizing ladies who have been melding
jazz, cabaret, and pop in delightful combinations for over eight years. “We
got together on a whim and we grew really fast; it’s a true
relationship and I want to play with them until I die,” says Westover,
referring to her musical cohorts, pianist Deidre Rodman Struck and
bassist Saskia Lane. Struck recently had a baby and Lane is giving
birth next month, so until the group reunites post-baby in November,
with a show at Manhattan’s Rockwood Music Hall, Westover is taking some
“eggs out of the Biddies basket” and nurturing her own independent
projects - like Monday’s show with her country-rock outfit, Strange
Cargo.
