I am sure you all remember The Dansettes - a kickin' 60's-style R&B rhythm section fronted by a trio of singers - two brunettes and a blonde. Well, earlier this year, the band went the way of the dodo due to artistic differences.
Is "artistic differences" like "exhaustion?" Let's remember Sarah Silverman's speech at the 2007 VMAs:
You know, a lot of, like, musicians and stuff, you guys will cite exhaustion to get out of stuff. And let me tell you. No one is buying it anymore. I’m going to give you advice, three words that will get you out of anything: “I have diarrhea.” You’re welcome.
No, seriously folks. Band breakups suck, and your fans are like friends. They have loyalties, and when you reform in another configuration, you wonder about who is going to stick with whom.
The Sweet Divines have not a thing to worry about. They've turned up the pretty-girl-quotient to 4, and the music hasn't suffered at all in transition. In fact, i think they have found some of that elusive magic that everyone is searching for. Perhaps as a result of The Dansettes' stellar reputation, their former vocalist Jennie Wasserman and the Dansettes' original songwriter/band leader J.B. Flatt have corralled a trio of women who are every bit as talented as we would want them to be.
The musicians are not short on chops, either. The Divine Soul Rhythm Band (god, I love it when people name their rhythm sections) is sexy, dirty, low down and fuuuuunky. Thick backbeats highlighted by a sharp horn section and a little flute lead me to challenge you to try to sit still in your chair listening to them on your little computer speakers.
The bass is loud, the vocals are full of soul and fire. See them in their first live show EVER at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn on January 18th, 2008. First awesome new band of the new year!
